Phumlani Ngwayo is from Dukuza, KwaZulu Natal, where he grew up herding cattle. Cattle are an important symbol of wealth in Zulu culture and Zulu folklore considers cattle to be the property of both living and ancestral relatives. Ngwayo’s ceramic sculptures reflect his close, first-hand observations of the animals and a keen awareness of their physiology. They are pit-fired according to the traditional Zulu method, which gives them their naturalistic textural patination.
