Fruit Serpentine Stone Sculpture
15.8kg | 41cm H x 26cm W
Kenneth Chidharara is part of the new generation of Zimbabwean artists that continue the tradition of abstract stone sculpture that was started in 1957.  Chidharara comes from Nyanga, a mountainous region in eastern Zimbabwe, where Fruit Serpentine is mined by hand.  He believes, as many sculptors do, that his role as a carver is to release the spirit trapped in the stone and to give it physical form.
The Fruit Serpentine is a particularly challenging stone as it is muticoloured, extremely dense, and has deep veins of variated strata. The resulting finish is smooth and almost translucent. A common feature of Zimbabwe stone sculpture is to leave part of the stone in its natural state as a tribute to the guiding spirit of the ancestors.
