The ukhamba is a low-fired clay vessel used for brewing and serving utshwala, the traditional sorghum ‘beer’ of southern African Nguni peoples. Ritual beer drinking is an integral part of Zulu culture and utshwala is served at all customary gatherings; when introducing a new child to the family’s ancestors, at puberty or initiation ceremonies, as well as at weddings and funerals. Utshwala is the essence of hospitality and communality among the Zulu.
