The uphiso is a low-fired clay vessel, distinguished among Zulu pottery by the presence of a neck. Izimpiso are used for transporting water and utshwala, a traditional sorghum ‘beer’.  Ritual beer drinking is an integral part of Zulu culture and utshwala is served at all customary gatherings; from births, weddings and funerals.  Utshwala is the essence of hospitality and communality among the Zulu.
